    Local Sustainability

Town councils and local authorities in the Basque Country will be able to integrate the UN 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) more easily thanks to an innovative guide prepared by the Udalsarea 2030 Basque network of sustainable municipalities.

    • Save

The guide provides the guidelines necessary so that each municipality can draw up its own Local 2030 Agenda by adapting the SDGs to its own context. It is a highly innovative practical guide due to its methodology. It is in fact the first of its kind to be published in Spain targeting the municipal sphere, which has earned it very positive ratings both within and outside the Basque Country.

This manual will become the perfect instrument for measuring local action with Sustainable Development Indicators, as well as the specific contribution of each municipality in terms of fulfilling the global goals proposed by the United Nations. The guide is structured in 5 steps which, once completed, will allow municipalities to have a Local 2030 Agenda and thus monitor their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Udalsarea 2030 municipalities have been working for years to promote sustainable development with strategic and sectoral planning. The guide produced by the network highlights this work and refocuses the efforts of city councils towards the challenges posed by the 2030 Agenda.

The guide will make it easier to prepare Local 2030 Agendas

Fulfilling global challenges at a local level is a reality in the Basque Country. Specifically, the Basque municipalities of Pasaia and Villabona have incorporated the 2030 Agenda into their recently approved plans. Other municipalities are also in the process of preparing their Local 2030 Agendas, such as Sestao, or analysing the contribution of their local policies to the SDGs, like Amurrio in Alava.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is the plan of action adopted by the UN General Assembly for people, the planet and prosperity, which aims to strengthen universal peace, partnership and access to justice. This Agenda sets out 17 goals with 169 integrated and indivisible targets covering the economic, social and environmental dimensions, and will govern global development agendas until 2030.

The 2030 Agenda offers a homogeneous framework for sustainable development planning at all levels of public administration. It includes a number of sectoral policies which,, in the case of municipalities, can bring about the change required to coordinate all of the local policies that promote sustainable development.

Municipalities will be able to measure their contribution to the overall fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals

Many governments and private organisations are already integrating these goals into their planning. This is the case of the Basque network of sustainable municipalities, which is called Udalsarea 2030 to make the integration of this global strategy into its activity clear.

The contribution of the Udalsarea 2030 network of municipalities to fulfilling the SDGs is included in the report Contribución de la Red Vasca de Municipios hacia la Sostenibilidad a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible | [L1]  (Contribution by the Basque Network of Municipalities for Sustainability to the Sustainable Development Goals).
