LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project learns from Biarritz experiences in adaptation of the coastline against the rise of sea level

The Director of Natural Heritage and Climate Change of the Basque Government, Adolfo Uriarte, and the project's partner entities —Ihobe, the City of Zarautz, AZTI, and Tecnalia— as well as the Basque Country's College of Roads, Canals, and Ports have participated in the visit

During the visit, the Basque delegation was able to see first-hand the ‘Wave Submersion’ operational service that the Rivages ProTech-Suez research center has launched on Biarritz beach to evaluate and mitigate the local effects due to impacts of storms and associated with climate change.

For their part, representatives of Ihobe and AZTI presented the analysis of action alternatives developed for the Zarautz boardwalk, work framed in action C.6. ‘Intervention pilots in the coastal area’ of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project. As they explained, this work has focused on compiling and proposing a catalogue of potential measures to guarantee the use of the beach and reduce the risk of erosion and flooding in the context of climate change.

About LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050

The largest climate action project in the Basque Country will transform the Basque region by coordinating a total of 40 climate change mitigation and adaptation actions in the 2019-2025 period. It is led by the public company Ihobe, part of the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, which works together with some 20 organisations. It will facilitate the effective deployment of the Basque Country's Climate Change Strategy, Klima 2050, at the urban level.
