Remanufacturing: a hidden business opportunity

Remanufactura

Product durability is one of the main pillars of the circular economy. One strategy for achieving this is remanufacturing, which is “a standardised industrial process carried out in industrial or manufacturing settings, in which products are restored to their original condition and performance – as good as new, or even better – and are usually sold with a commercial warranty”.

European regulations are already incorporating remanufacturability criteria (CEN 45558 standards) into products covered by the Ecodesign Directive. Its new version, the ESPR regulation, lays the foundations for the Digital Product Passport (DPP), which enables the tracking of information throughout the product’s life cycle.

Remanufacturing enables companies to reduce delivery times to customers, mitigate supply risks, lower costs for customers whilst maintaining a high profit margin for the manufacturer, and minimise the environmental and carbon footprint of products.

Companies are considering adapting their business models. One solution is ‘Product Value Retention’ for components and equipment manufactured by the companies themselves.

Remanufacturing and advanced repair are essential for implementing this business model.

However, there is a need to build greater customer confidence in remanufactured products.

This conference will present the “Manual of Maturity Level in Remanufacturing”, which has been implemented across six Basque industries. This manual helps to improve the remanufacturing process itself and build customer confidence until the ongoing CEN standardisation process for remanufacturing is completed in 2027.

This event is aimed at industrial companies that remanufacture their own products or third-party components and equipment, at customers and suppliers of these companies, as well as at technology providers driving the automation, digitalisation and modernisation of these industrial processes.
