Environmental Communication

Ihobe, the Basque Government's public environmental management company, believes that quality environmental communication is key to making society more sustainable. That is why it collaborates with the media, making resources available to its professionals to facilitate their work, and organises environmental awareness campaigns to raise public awareness.

Ihobe is working in collaboration with the Basque Journalists

Association (CVP-AVP) to promote environmental communication in the Basque media. Since 2019, it has been promoting the Basque Environmental Journalism Award, with the aim of recognising the work of information professionals in publicising sustainable development, disseminating the effects of climate change and promoting the conservation of the natural environment, among other issues.

Ihobe also has a collaboration agreement with the Association of Environmental Journalists-APIA, from which the Environmental Communication School originated, among other initiatives, as part of the Summer Courses organised by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), in response to two major concerns: communication and the environment.

‘En verde-Berdean’ is Ihobe's sustainability and the environmental podcast channel, which is hosted by journalist Bego Beristain and gives a voice to people and organisations that are rowing towards a more sustainable way of life, sharing their experiences and projects related to the natural environment and the environmental challenges in the Basque Country.

COMMUNICATION PROYECTS

Environmental Communication School

The Environmental Communication School is one of the activities included in the programming of the Summer Courses of the University of the Basque Country-UPV/EHU and is also part of the Donostia Sustainability Forum, a forum for interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability from social, environmental, and economic perspectives. Organized by Ihobe-Public Environmental Management Company of the Basque Government and APIA-Environmental Information Journalists Association, is a forum for discussion that advocates for the role of communication as a tool to mobilize action.

In the first edition of 2019, the focus was on communicating the climate crisis; in the second, communication on biodiversity and natural heritage was addressed; the third edition, in September 2021, was dedicated to the energy and climate transition; and the fourth edition was addressed to the relationship between the climate crisis, ecosystem conservation and human health.
The fifth edition of the School, held on September 7 and 8 at the Miramar Palace in Donostia and focused on how to communicate environmental issues with and for young people.

En verde-Berdean, Ihobe's podcast channel on sustainability and the environment

En verde-Berdean
is Ihobe's podcast channel on sustainability and the environment which gives a voice to people and organisations that are working to achieve more sustainable lifestyles.

This format, which is presented by journalist Begoña Beristain, was created in March 2021 with the aim of disseminating experiences and projects related to the natural environment and the environmental challenges facing the Basque Country —such as the climate crisis, loss of biodiversity, conservation of the natural environment, implementation of the circular economy, sustainable development, etc.— to inspire other people and organisations, and even build synergies between them.

In its first episode, En verde-Berdean featured writer and naturalist Gabi Martínez.

In the second episode the focus was on biodiversity with director Lexeia Larrañaga and producer Alex Gutiérrez of Avis Producciones, creators of the audiovisual project “Natura Bizia”.

The third included the creative director and one of the founders of Ekomodo, Adriana Uribesalgo.

And, in the last one to date, we boarded the Mater museum ship with Izaskun Suberbiola, the director of the initiative.

In the fifth, the writer, scientific communicator and environmental technician Andreu Escrivà gave some keys to curbing climate change, avoiding blame and taking action.

Basque Environmental Journalism Award

The Basque Environmental Journalism Award was the result of the first collaboration agreement between the public company Ihobe and the Basque Journalists Association (CVP-AVP) to promote environmental communication, with the creation of a new category in the Basque Journalism Awards organised annually by CVP-AVP.

The main aim of the award is to recognise the work of media professionals (press, radio, television and internet) in promoting and extending the culture of the environment among economic and social actors and the citizens of the Basque Country. In other words, it recognises the key role of information professionals in disseminating environmental awareness to the general public.

The first Environmental Journalism Award in 2019 went to Julen Rekondo, a communicator specialising in environmental issues, with an outstanding track record in disseminating and researching nature conservation issues.

In 2020, the award went to Gorka Belamendia, coordinator of the Salburua Wetlands Interpretation Centre and a regular contributor to a number of media outlets.

RESOURCES FOR JOURNALISTS

The environment and all aspects related to sustainable development are a permanent presence on political agendas and in the media. Television news, social media, the press and radio broadcast countless pieces of information almost daily on a wide range of environmental issues, such as climate change, biodiversity and air quality.

In a context in which there is more information than ever before and where the dissemination of news is carried out by a multitude of news media and information agents, journalists in the media have to deal with complex environmental issues, with little time to interpret and contextualise them.

The media play a key role in raising public awareness of the environmental challenges of the 21st century. As a public entity dedicated to the environment, Ihobe would like to collaborate by providing its professionals in the sector with information and resources to facilitate their work.
