Under2 Coalition recognises the Basque Country’s leadership in climate action

The Basque Government has been a Under2 Coalition member since it was set up in 2015 and has been involved in the network’s governance as a member of the Executive Committee since 2020

The Basque Country has been a member of the coalition right from the start and is one of the 40 regions, out of the 260 belonging to the network, that have committed to becoming climate neutral by 2050 by employing their technical, legal, and economic resources to achieving that goal.

The annual report explicitly recognises the Basque Government’s leadership in its role in the governance of the network as a member of the Executive Committee from 2020-2022. The Committee is made up of 15 regions from around the world and has led the growth and impact of Under2 Coalition over the last two years, alongside its Board of Chairs.

Further, Faster, Together

Further, Faster, Together, launched during the COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, is one of the latest initiatives led by Under2 Coalition in cooperation with other international organisations.

As part of this initiative, 68 regional governments, including the Basque Government, sent a clear message to the Parties of the UNFCCC and undertook to implement a series of intersectoral actions before 2030 in order to reduce GHG emissions and limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 ºC. The Basque Government’s Minister for Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment, Arantxa Tapia, set out the Basque Country’s commitments in the areas of intergovernmental cooperation and planning, infrastructure, environmental justice, and nature-based solutions.

About the Under2 Coalition

Under2 Coalition was founded in 2015, during the 21st UN Climate Change Conference – COP21. The initiative currently has 260 member governments, which represent 1.75 billion people and account for 50% of the global economy. Its secretariat is managed by The Climate Group.
