The 7th ASTEKLIMA, the Basque Climate and Energy Week, will be held from 16 to 25 October. This year, this initiative driven by the Basque Government’s Ministry of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, in conjunction with Ihobe and the Basque Energy board (EVE), will focus on the impact that everyday decisions have on climate and energy. Under the tagline ‘Your Footprint Starts with a Simple Gesture’, the 2026 edition invites people to reflect on how mobility, consumption, energy or food habits, among others, can make the difference for a more sustainable and resilient future.

Over the last seven years, ASTEKLIMA has established itself as one of the leading energy and climate awareness-raising programmes of the Basque Country. Every autumn, the initiative gathers public administrations, education centres, universities, companies, associations and social entities together with a common goal: to bring the energy reality and climate action to the general public by means of outreach, practical and participatory experiences.

The 2026 edition seeks to bolster this philosophy by focusing on the transformative power of small everyday gestures. Numerous everyday decisions – from the way of getting around to how energy is consumed at home or when shopping for certain items – influence greenhouse gas emissions and the construction of a more sustainable energy model. ASTEKLIMA aims to turn these words into action, by providing citizens with the tools, knowledge and experiences to make it happen.

ASTEKLIMA’s strength is also reflected in the participation numbers for last year’s edition. In 2025, there were 87 organising entities running 138 activities open to all throughout the territory, which consolidated the event as one of the Basque Country’s main citizen awareness-raising and rallying initiatives on climate and energy.

Call open to build the Basque Country’s climate agenda

The organisation has already opened the call for local councils, education centres, universities, companies, NGOs and other entities to submit activities to be on the ASTEKLIMA 2026 programme. 

Workshops, exhibitions, outreach talks, family-friendly activities, guided tours, participatory actions or innovative awareness-raising initiatives can be part of a programme to be rolled out through the three provinces and open to the public.

Local councils, education centres, companies and social entities are invited to send in their activities to be part of a programme that will again be rolled out across the Basque Country

ASTEKLIMA 2026 will once again recognise the commitment of entities that are driving exemplary citizen awareness and rallying initiatives. Any activity that meets the set requirements will be recognised for their contribution to the Basque Climate and Energy Week; an expert jury will then select the best initiatives in different categories linked to climate action and the energy transition.
 

KLIMA Azoka will be one of this year’s new headliners 

The 7th ASTEKLIMA will also have an important ally: KLIMA Azoka. The travelling fair run by Ihobe and EVE ended the first half of 2026 with nearly 2,000 participants and an average rating by the public of 4.68 out of 5. 

KLIMA Azoka use participatory dynamics, games and interactive spaces as an invitation to reflect on energy, mobility, consumption habits or everyday climate action, showing that individual decisions also help to build a more sustainable future.

KLIMA Azoka, the travelling fair, will play a key role in this year’s edition and it has already taken awareness-raising activities to nearly 2,000 people during the first half of 2026

After attending such events as Ibilaldia, World Environment Day, Euskal Eskola Publikoaren Jaia and Araba Euskaraz, the fair will continue on its journey in autumn and will be featured on the ASTEKLIMA 2026 programme. 

ASTEKLIMA 2026 will also coincide with the European Week of Advanced Management, coordinated by Euskalit, an initiative that promotes more innovative, sustainable and future-oriented organisations committed to addressing major societal challenges. Scheduled to take place from 14 to 28 October, both initiatives share values and areas of action linked to the sustainability transition, creating opportunities to strengthen synergies and broaden their social impact.

Addressing the energy transition and climate change requires major transformations, but also thousands of small everyday decisions. The Basque Climate and Energy Week thus seeks to make further progress in constructing an informed and jointly responsible citizenry who is committed to this process. Because collective actions always begin with an initial individual step and – as this year’s tagline reminds us – ‘Your Footprint Starts with a Simple Gesture’.
