The Basque Country bolsters its position as an advanced territory in climate action during Climate Week NYC

This week, the Basque Government is taking part in the Climate Week NYC as an active member of the Under2 Coalition, in the international gatherings of the subnational leaders committed to accelerating climate action. The Basque Country has also taken part in the panel organised by Regions4, the network of regional governments of which it is also a member.

During the Global Ministerial Meeting of the Under2 Coalition, held at the Glasshouse in New York on Monday 22 September, representatives of nearly a hundred regions and states discussed the key role of subnational governments against a global backdrop of political instability and the backsliding on some national commitments. They there stressed the need to bolster the climate ambition from the territories, speed up the rolling out of policies and celebrate the tenth anniversary of the coalition as a driver of fair and effective change.

The Basque delegation has taken part in an Under2 Coalition meeting and in a Regions4 panel, reaffirming its commitment to subnational climate action on the path to COP30

The Basque Government delegation was led by Conchi Aranguren, head of the Basque Country Delegation to the United States and Canada, who represented the autonomous community along with the leaders of regions including California, Quebec, Maharashtra and Scotland.

The Basque Country likewise took part in the Regions4 panel, held on Tuesday 23 September, focused on the strategic sharing of regional solutions for climate action and on laying the pathway to the COP30 in Brazil. The panel address the role of regional governments to foster just resilience, multilevel governance and bio-regional approaches, along with creating the new Just Resilience Action Platform (JRAP).

The Basque Government’s participation in such international forums shores up the contribution of subnational governments to global climate targets, the need to share experiences and to assume our share of responsibility vis-a-vis the most disadvantaged regions.
