The Basque Country at the Under2 Coalition high level meeting in Brussels to champion the regions key role in implementing the Green Deal

The participating regions have published a joint statement outlining a shared green agenda and the commitment for a climate neutral Europe by means of action at all levels of government. To quote the communiqué, "the science is clear: we need more action along the trajectory of the Green Deal to tackle the climate crisis. For the EU to retain its international credibility at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference, COP29, urgent action is essential. The European Councils strategic agenda for 2024- 2029 must place climate as a central element to increase resilience, energy security and economic competitiveness".Along with the Basque Country, the regions of Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Emilia-Romagna, Scotland and Västra Götaland took part in the meeting

Accompanied by María Bilbao, a climate change and environmental expert of the Basque Government's delegation in Brussels, Marta Marín actively took part in one of the event's thematic sessions to success sustainable building and energy efficiency. The session gathered together government representatives and leaders of the private sector to address the barriers to speeding up the efficient retrofitting of buildings in Europe. The focus was on complying with the European Green Deal's commitment to advance "further, faster, together", with energy efficiency as a cornerstone. The information from the session will be the basis for the Climate Group's Renovation Revolution project; its aim is to pinpoint effective strategies and solution to expand and speed up the rates of efficient building renovation throughout Europe. The ideas and recommendations put forward will help to report back on effective solutions to apply the Energy Performance of Building Directive.
About the Under2 Coalition
The Under2 Coalition is the main international network of states and regions committed to climate. It was founded in 2015, during the 21st UN Climate Change Conference COP21. The initiative currently has over 270 member governments that account for 50% of the global economy. Its secretariat is managed by The Climate Group.
The Basque Government has been a member of the coalition right from the start and is one of the 40 regions committed to becoming climate neutral by 2050, and putting their technical, legal and economic resources to achieving that goal.
